Job Title: Head of ESS Engineering
Role Description: The Head of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) Engineering will lead the design and engineering efforts for the expanding portfolio of battery energy storage projects. This role calls for an experienced ESS engineer capable of orchestrating inputs from various stakeholders and disciplines to craft system designs that maximize value for the company and its customers, while adhering to the latest industry standards and best practices. The Head of ESS Engineering will spearhead the project design team, collaborating with the broader company team and project partners to ensure that projects are designed, constructed, and tested in alignment with cost, schedule, and performance requirements.
- Lead all stages of project design and engineering, encompassing conceptual and advanced system design, compliance with industry codes and standards, management of customer requirements, assessment of site conditions, development of balance of plant solutions, support during project development, technical assistance during construction, and planning for project commissioning.
- Coordinate with customers, suppliers, engineering partners, and contractors to facilitate the design and implementation of projects.
- Collaborate with internal and external teams to establish system use cases and requirements, setting project technical baselines based on inputs from customers, utilities/interconnections, AHJ, etc.
- Ensure the completeness of design and delivery of BESS projects in collaboration with other teams, including development, construction, and operations.
- Lead technical tasks in preparing proposals, projects, and evaluating potential project/supplier acquisition opportunities.
- Engage with technology partners to stay informed about the latest ESS technologies relevant to company projects.
- Develop technical documents and exhibits for engineering, procurement, and construction partners.
- Formulate RFOs/RFPs for ESS equipment and oversee the RFP process.
- Conduct technical due diligence on technology partners and solutions.
- Report to the leadership team on the planning and technical design of BESS projects.
- Establish and oversee company policies and processes for executing design activities.
- Identify tools and processes to enhance and streamline the design process.
- Assist in growing and scaling the engineering team to accommodate the rapidly increasing project volume.
- Manage and mentor junior employees in the engineering of energy storage projects.
- Contribute to the learning and growth of the company by executing projects in support of the company’s process, tool, and subject matter expertise development.
- Provide general administrative and management support functions to improve operations at company.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another related engineering field, with a comprehensive understanding of multiple engineering domains.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional engineering experience in the renewable/BESS industry.
- Extensive technical experience working on energy storage projects or other relevant inverter-based, utility-scale generation projects.
- Proficient knowledge of BESS plant design and optimization.
- Familiarity with the National Electric Code and various Standard Industry Codes, including IEEE and NFPA.
- Ability to motivate and develop others.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
