Government Welcomes Report on Electricity Networks as Vital for UK's Energy Security

Grant Shapps, the Secretary for Energy Security, welcomes the comprehensive report prepared by Nick Winser, the Electricity Networks Commissioner of the UK. Shapps has affirmed his commitment to carefully consider the recommendations put forth in the report, with the intent of formulating a robust action plan in response.

The recently published report by Nick Winser outlines a strategic roadmap aimed at reinforcing the nation's energy security. Furthermore, the report underscores the significance of harnessing the UK's prominent status in renewable energy on a global scale. Over the past decade, the United Kingdom has experienced remarkable success in bolstering investments in renewable energy generation, boasting a remarkable 500% increase. To optimize the nation's potential, guarantee its capacity to capitalize on renewable energy prospects, and ensure a steady supply of clean power to households and commercial enterprises, the government tasked Nick Winser with conducting an exhaustive review.

Grant Shapps, Energy Security Secretary, warmly embraces the findings of the report and is poised to assess the proposed recommendations. His intention is to unveil an action plan later this year that will not only fortify the country's energy security but also contribute to the reduction of household expenditures and the overall expansion of the economy.

The recent illegal invasion by Putin into Ukraine has triggered far-reaching consequences within global energy markets. This has expedited the pressing need for a more self-reliant approach to energy production, placing renewed emphasis on domestically sourced energy alternatives, including renewables, nuclear power, and the considerable resources of the North Sea oil and gas reserves.

The report unveiled today conveys a pivotal message: the expeditious development of new power lines is attainable within a significantly condensed timeframe. Although this endeavor presents challenges, accelerating the deployment of crucial electricity transmission lines is deemed both imperative and feasible. A series of recommendations has been crafted to expedite the current timelines for the implementation of onshore transmission network infrastructure, potentially reducing them to a span of seven years. This proactive approach is designed to expedite the achievement of energy security and net-zero objectives. The government is scheduled to release its response to these proposals later this year.

Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Grant Shapps, commented, “The UK is leading the world on renewable energy and decarbonising faster than any other country in the G7. We must ensure we are taking full advantage of our success and getting the increased supply of homegrown, clean energy that we have at our fingertips to people’s homes and businesses for years to come.

That is why we asked Nick Winser to carry out this review - I welcome his report and am grateful for his work.

This is another important step as we continue to reform our energy system to drive down bills, grow the economy and ensure tyrants like Putin can never again use energy as a weapon of war.”
