Talking with Talent – Samuel Knight Rail Recruitment Consultant, Cullan Alexander, shares valuable insights provided by a candidate of his.

Cullan: “What do you think are the most important skills for engineers to have?”

Engineer: “There are a few key skills that I believe are essential for engineers. First and foremost, problem-solving skills are crucial. Engineers are tasked with solving complex problems, and being able to think critically and come up with creative solutions is essential.

Communication skills are also incredibly important. Engineers need to be able to effectively communicate their ideas, designs, and solutions to colleagues, clients, and stakeholders. This involves not only verbal communication but also the ability to write clear and concise technical reports and documentation.

Another important skill is teamwork. Most engineering projects are collaborative efforts that require engineers to work closely with colleagues from different disciplines and backgrounds. Being able to collaborate effectively and contribute to a team is key to the success of any project.”

Cullan: “What advice would you give to someone who is considering pursuing a career in engineering?”

Engineer: “My advice would be to pursue your passion and never stop learning. Engineering is a challenging and rewarding field, but it requires a lot of hard work and dedication.

Seek out internships, co-op programs, and other opportunities to gain hands-on experience and learn from experienced engineers. And don't be afraid to ask questions or seek guidance from mentors along the way. Most importantly, be passionate about what you do and never lose sight of the impact that engineering can have on the world.”
