Struggling to Write a Strong CV when Applying to Climate Tech Roles?
Here are some of our tips for crafting a strong CV when applying to a climate-tech job:
1. Highlight your relevant experience: Be sure to emphasize any experience you have working in the climate-tech industry, as well as any related experience such as sustainability or environmental work. If you don't have direct experience, focus on transferable skills such as software and web development, project management, analytics, consulting, engineering or innovation.
2. Include your technical skills: Climate-tech jobs often require technical skills, such as knowledge of industry-related systems. Make sure you list any relevant technical skills you have, including modern technologies that you are proficient in.
3. Showcase your accomplishments: Use metrics and concrete examples to demonstrate your impact in previous roles. For example, if you developed and implemented a successful sustainability program at a previous company, include specific data on how it reduced carbon emissions or waste.
4. Demonstrate your passion for the industry: Climate-tech companies want to hire people who are passionate about their mission. Make sure your CV shows your commitment to sustainability and the environment, including any volunteer work or advocacy you have done.
5. Tailor your CV to the specific job: Review the job description carefully and tailor your CV to highlight the skills and experience that are most relevant to the position. This will show the employer that you have taken the time to understand the job requirements and are a good fit for the role.
6. Keep it concise: A CV should be no more than two pages long. Make sure you are only including relevant information and focus on making it easy to read with clear formatting and bullet points.
Director’s Tip: “For junior candidates, it is highly recommended to develop personal projects and feature them on Github as a way to demonstrate your interest in entering the industry. Personal projects can serve as your unique selling point (USP) if you lack work experience. Hiring managers often prioritize personal projects when reviewing CVs. On the other hand, experienced candidates should enumerate the technologies they have utilized in each company they have worked for, and obtaining certifications can also be advantageous. Additionally, having these details in your LinkedIn profile can improve your visibility to potential recruiters and hiring managers.”
