NETA Technician Level 3 (Senior Electrical Testing Technician)

Position Summary

The NETA Technician Level 3 is a senior-level field service professional responsible for performing, supervising, and leading acceptance testing, maintenance testing, and troubleshooting of electrical power distribution systems. This role requires advanced technical expertise, leadership in the field, and compliance with standards set by the InterNational Electrical Testing Association (NETA), as well as applicable industry codes such as National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The Level 3 Technician often acts as a crew leader, technical authority on-site, and mentor to junior technicians.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Duties

  • Perform advanced electrical testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting on:

    • Low, medium, and high-voltage switchgear

    • Circuit breakers (LV/MV/HV)

    • Power transformers

    • Protective relays (electromechanical and microprocessor-based)

    • Motor control centers (MCCs)

    • Cables and bus systems

  • Conduct acceptance and maintenance testing in accordance with NETA ATS and MTS standards.

  • Perform relay testing, calibration, and protection system verification.

  • Analyze test data and determine equipment condition and recommended corrective actions.

  • Lead complex troubleshooting assignments in energized and de-energized environments.

Leadership & Supervision

  • Lead field crews and oversee Level 1 and Level 2 technicians.

  • Coordinate job site activities with project managers, engineers, and customers.

  • Ensure job safety planning and compliance with safety procedures including NFPA 70E.

  • Serve as primary technical contact on assigned projects.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare detailed test reports in compliance with NETA standards.

  • Review and approve reports prepared by junior technicians.

  • Document deficiencies and provide technical recommendations.

Safety & Compliance

  • Maintain strict adherence to OSHA regulations and company safety policies.

  • Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and lead safety briefings.

  • Ensure proper use of PPE and safe work practices.
