Health & Safety Coordinator (Contractor) – Hyperscale Data Center Projects
Position Overview
The Health & Safety Coordinator is responsible for supporting the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) programs across Hyperscale Data Center construction and commissioning projects. Working as part of the contractor team, the role ensures compliance with Hyperscale EHS requirements, local legislation, industry best practices, and project-specific safety standards.
The successful candidate will work closely with project managers, construction teams, subcontractors, and Hyperscale representatives to promote a strong safety culture and maintain a safe working environment throughout all phases of the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety Management
- Support the implementation of project-specific Health, Safety, and Environmental Management Plans.
- Ensure compliance with Hyperscale Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) standards and site-specific requirements.
- Monitor contractor and subcontractor compliance with applicable legislation, company procedures, and client requirements.
- Conduct routine site inspections, audits, and safety observations to identify hazards and verify corrective actions.
- Assist in the development and review of Risk Assessments, Method Statements (RAMS), Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and Safe Systems of Work.
Site Monitoring & Compliance
- Perform daily safety walks and inspections across active construction and commissioning areas.
- Verify that work permits are properly issued, controlled, and closed out.
- Monitor high-risk activities including:
- Work at Height
- Electrical Safety and Energization Activities
- Lifting Operations and Crane Activities
- Confined Space Entry
- Hot Works
- Excavation and Ground Disturbance
- Temporary Works
- Ensure appropriate PPE requirements are implemented and maintained.
- Track and follow up on corrective actions arising from inspections, audits, and incident investigations.
Incident Management
- Participate in incident, near-miss, and hazard investigations.
- Assist with root cause analysis and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Maintain accurate records of incidents, inspections, training, and safety performance metrics.
- Support reporting requirements to both contractor management and Hyperscale project teams.
Training & Safety Culture
- Deliver site safety inductions and toolbox talks.
- Support workforce engagement through safety campaigns, stand-downs, and awareness initiatives.
- Promote proactive hazard reporting and behavioural safety programs.
- Mentor supervisors and subcontractors on best safety practices and compliance expectations.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain HSE documentation, registers, permits, and compliance records.
- Prepare weekly and monthly safety reports.
- Track key performance indicators (KPIs) including observations, inspections, training compliance, and incident statistics.
- Support external audits and client reviews.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Liaise with Google EHS representatives, project management teams, subcontractors, and regulatory authorities as required.
- Attend project coordination meetings and provide safety updates.
- Support collaborative problem-solving to address site safety challenges.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Diploma, Degree, or equivalent qualification in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, or a related discipline.
- NEBOSH General Certificate, NEBOSH Construction Certificate, or equivalent recognized safety qualification.
- Minimum 3 years' experience in a Health & Safety role within construction, engineering, industrial, or data center environments.
- Strong knowledge of construction safety regulations and industry standards.
- Experience with contractor management and permit-to-work systems.
- Excellent communication, reporting, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred
- Previous experience on hyperscale data center projects.
- Experience working on Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services (AWS), or other mission-critical facilities.
- NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ Level 6, or equivalent advanced safety qualification.
- Auditor qualification or experience conducting formal HSE audits.
- Knowledge of commissioning and operational readiness safety requirements.
