Mechanical Engineer (Contractor) – Data Center Projects

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer (Contractor) to support the design, coordination, and delivery of hyperscale data center projects for a Hyperscale client. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, construction partners, vendors, and client stakeholders to develop and implement mechanical systems that meet the demanding requirements of mission-critical facilities.

This role requires strong technical expertise in HVAC, cooling systems, piping, and mechanical infrastructure associated with large-scale data center environments. The engineer will contribute throughout the project lifecycle, from concept development and detailed design through construction support, commissioning, and project closeout.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and review mechanical system designs for data center facilities, including HVAC, chilled water, condenser water, cooling towers, pumps, piping systems, and associated infrastructure.
  • Produce and coordinate engineering calculations, technical specifications, reports, and construction documents.
  • Collaborate with electrical, structural, architectural, and controls engineering teams to ensure integrated project delivery.
  • Review equipment selections and evaluate vendor submittals for compliance with project requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, value engineering exercises, and risk assessments.
  • Support BIM/Revit coordination efforts and resolve mechanical clashes during design and construction phases.
  • Conduct field investigations, site visits, and construction observations to verify installation quality and compliance with design intent.
  • Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs), review change orders, and provide engineering support during construction.
  • Assist with commissioning activities, functional performance testing, and turnover documentation.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, sustainability goals, and Google data center design requirements.
  • Coordinate with project managers and stakeholders to maintain schedules, budgets, and project objectives.
  • Identify opportunities for improving energy efficiency, reliability, maintainability, and operational performance.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering design and delivery.
  • Experience with mission-critical facilities, data centers, industrial facilities, or large commercial infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, chilled water systems, cooling technologies, pumps, piping, and mechanical equipment.
  • Proficiency with engineering design software, including AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Familiarity with mechanical load calculations and energy analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including ASHRAE, International Building Code (IBC), International Mechanical Code (IMC), and relevant local regulations.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and coordination skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced project environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure.
  • Previous experience supporting Google, AWS, Microsoft, Meta, or other hyperscale data center projects.
  • Experience with liquid cooling technologies and advanced data center cooling strategies.
  • Familiarity with commissioning processes and operational readiness activities.
  • Experience coordinating within BIM environments and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • LEED accreditation or sustainability-focused design experience.
  • Understanding of reliability concepts including redundancy, concurrent maintainability, and fault tolerance.

Technical Competencies

  • HVAC Design
  • Chilled Water Systems
  • Data Center Cooling Infrastructure
  • Mechanical Equipment Selection
  • Hydronic Systems
  • Pump and Piping Design
  • CFD and Thermal Analysis (preferred)
  • Revit/BIM Coordination
  • Construction Administration
  • Commissioning Support
  • Technical Specifications Development

Work Environment

  • Contract position supporting a Hyperscale client's data center projects.
  • Hybrid, remote, or on-site assignments depending on project requirements.
  • Periodic travel to project sites and data center campuses may be required.
  • Opportunity to work on some of the world's most advanced and mission-critical infrastructure projects.

Success Factors

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical expertise, attention to detail, collaborative problem-solving skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions in complex, fast-paced data center environments.
